Berthoud's 2002 "Ursus" blends 100% estate-grown merlot (70%), cabernet sauvignon (25%) and cabernet franc (5%). The merlot vines on the Berthoud's 4.5-acre Sonoma Valley estate were planted in 1973, while the cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc were planted in 1997. A bit austere at bottling, it has benefitted from the extra-aging time and is starting to show more like a young Pomerol than a typical California Bordeaux blend.
